Flexing our creative muscles can be hard, because it seems like it’s often seen as a gift reserved for a chosen few. Let’s be honest, though and say that we’ve all stared at a blank screen or page without knowing what to write and how to start. It can feel like waiting for a bolt of lightning of inspiration that somehow never strikes.
That's where a little playfulness comes into our lives and I shall tell you some tips and tricks on how to finding the inspiration and motivation to write. It can come from writing something with your non-dominant hand, change a routine or do what I love to do best when it comest to blogging and that's to look into the magic of the fedorapancakes.com/ community.
There are so many ways, though to shake things up, especially if you’ve been feeling stuck. Here are some fun and unexpected ways to spark some new ideas, because sometimes all it takes is a little creative chaos to get the magic of writing flowing.
Do this to spark your creativity to the max:
- Write with your non-dominant hand – It forces your brain to work differently and can lead to unexpected ideas (or at least some hilarious handwriting). I’ve tried this a long time ago and it was absolutely chaotic. I prefer using a keyboard, but to really get out of your comfort zone, I recommend you try this.
- Change your scenery – Work from a café, a park, or even just a different room to shake up your thought process. This perhaps will also depend on the weather, your wallet and/or your mood, but think of the possibilities it can lead to if you get some fresh air in your lungs and a great cup of coffee too?
- Set a silly constraint – Write a short story without using the letter “E” or draw something in under 60 seconds—limitations can spark creativity! There also tons of weekly or daily blogging challenges to try, like the 6 words story challenge or the A – Z challenge that apparently happens every April.
- Doodle like no one’s watching – Even if you’re not an artist, sketching random shapes or characters can unlock new ideas. I myself could use a tool that automatically creates spheres and automatic lines that squiggle and move by themselves. There used to be a tool like that from Adobe, but I don’t remember the name of that software. If you do, let me know in the comments below, thanks.
- Use random word generators – Let a generator throw words at you and try to connect them into a fun idea or story. Or ask chatGPT for ideas, like I do often. It’s how I got the idea to write this specific blog post, so thanks AI yet again for saving my ass writing posts for you readers to enjoy.
- Reverse-engineer a story – Take a well-known book, movie, or blog post and imagine a completely different ending. Or what if classic fairy tales had a modern twist? That’s something chatGPT has bugged me about a lot, so that’s perhaps something you could do instead? I tried but it did not work out that well, so I’m leaving it open for somebody else to write instead.
- Borrow someone else’s perspective – Write from the POV of an inanimate object (a teapot, a traffic light, a sock that lost its pair). Or from your pets! That’s always a hoot to read, especially from grumpy cats and far too happy dogs in my opinion.
- Try “word dumping” – Set a timer for five minutes and write whatever comes to mind without stopping—it’s messy, but it can reveal hidden gems. There’s also a 6 minute story weekly blogging challenge that does this and if you haven’t tried, do it! I have no idea who started this, because I could not find an original post. If you know, please link share the link to me in the comments.
- Switch up your format – If you always write, try recording a voice note. If you blog, try sketching an idea first. I’ve been thinking to turn all of my blog posts into podcast episodes, but using an AI voice to do so. I keep reminding you that my privacy is extremely important to me, so I won’t be doing that myself.
- Engage with the fedorapancakes.com/ community – Read and comment on other blogs, join a fun writing challenge, or collaborate with another blogger for a fresh take. I do this almost daily and it’s so fun and make new connections out there and expand on both my creativity and friendships online.
If you have any other kinds of tips and tricks to share with me or the other readers of this blog, I encourage you deeply to leave them in the comments below as usual. I say this knowing there’s a current bug on WordPress that hopefully has been fixed by now, but if not here’s what you can do to increase your chances of getting your comment into my system:
- Write your comment using the WordPress Reader. Below each post there’s a field for leaving comments. I’ve read that people who are doing this have a greater chance of getting their comments noticed by the author and therefor it gets replied to in a reasonable timeframe.
- If I haven’t replied at all to your first comment within 24 hours, get back to me by using my contact page and I will reply ASAP.
Let’s hope WordPress fixes this bug soon, because the comment system is what makes it worth while to write blog posts in this incredible community and platform we call WordPress.
