The Importance of Privacy in Blogging

The great thing about having your own blog is that you get to decide how much you’d like to reveal on it. In today’s world, oversharing seems to be quite the norm and it’s easy to forget the importance of privacy. It does not matter if you’re blogging for fun, creativity or to connect with others – keeping certain details to yourself is not about being secretive. It’s about maintaining the control over your own story. A blog can be deeply personal without exposing every aspect of your life and focusing on privacy can actually make your writing stronger, more intentional and even more enjoyable.

That is the thought I had when I created this blog. Privacy in this particular blog is the first thing I have in mind whenever I choose to do something in here. I will never disclose where I live, in what country but who knows where anybody lives, unless they disclose it? There are VPN’s in high use these days. I will not tell you what I work with, because that’s irrelevant to what I write in this blog. I am a blogger, though and I love my writing. I write a lot, both privately and publicly but I keep what I write and how I do it separately.

To delve deeper into the subject of privacy and blogging, I’ve got some key points to share and I can agree with all of these:

Protecting Your Personal Information

Once something is published online, it’s hard to take it back. Being mindful of what you share prevents oversharing sensitive details like your full name, location, or personal life events that could be misused. That is why I will never share such personal details with you, and still try to be as personal as possible while not disclosing that information. I believe that it’s possible to do both without anybody suffering from it.

Avoiding Unwanted Attention

Not everything needs to be shared online, and keeping certain details private helps you maintain control over your personal information. The internet is vast, and while it’s a great space for creativity and connection, not everyone interacts with content in good faith. Being mindful of what you reveal ensures that your blogging experience remains positive and free from unnecessary concerns. Privacy allows you to focus on what truly matters—expressing your thoughts, engaging with a supportive community, and enjoying the process—without worrying about where your personal details might end up.

Separating Your Online and Offline Life

Blogging should be a space for creativity and expression, but that doesn’t mean every aspect of your personal life needs to be public. Setting boundaries allows you to enjoy blogging without feeling exposed. And again, that is why I don’t tell you all about my pets, my boyfriend, where I work etc. If you want to read such personal things, ask your oversharing friends 😂.

Encouraging More Focus on Content Over Identity

When privacy is a priority, your writing becomes more about ideas, creativity, and storytelling rather than personal details. This can lead to a more engaging and universally relatable blog. With my intention to write blog posts to help inspire you to do better in your life, I am doing just that. Instead of writing about my daily routine or answering way to personal daily prompts from WordPress, I write about you – the reader instead to make your day a little bit happier, word by word.

Avoiding Future Regrets

What seems fine to share today might feel too revealing years down the line. Being cautious now can prevent future discomfort or the need to erase parts of your blogging history. I surely don’t want to have anxiety over something I shared on the blog that’s gonna bite me in the ass later on just because I wasn’t paying attention. If there’s something I’m gonna do and learn in my personal life, it’s to start to pay attention to what I do online, and it starts with this particular blog of mine.

Staying in Control of Your Narrative

You decide what people know about you. Keeping certain aspects private ensures that your online presence reflects only what you want it to. I do not want you to know where I live, and what I do for a living besides writing. Like I’ve mentioned before, it’s totally unnecessary information, because I write to partially help you and to improve the world in the way that I can with my words.

Reducing Stress and Anxiety

The pressure to constantly share personal updates can be overwhelming. Keeping privacy in mind allows you to blog more freely without worrying about external judgment or expectations. We can all start to think of our privacy first, even on social media where it’s more apparent to share every single details of our lives. I advise strongly against sharing on social media when you’re not at home to minimize the risk of getting your house burglarized, but many friends that I have could not care less about that aspect. I also have friends that have been way too honest on social media and on job interviews and it has cost them dearly to repair those mistakes and so I urge you to start thinking about what’s necessary to tell others, even in your daily life if it’s applicable.

Final thoughts about privacy and blogging online

Of course I also mean that by writing with privacy in mind, that you don’t become an asshole because of it. I hear that regular people who are using pen names are being accused of being trolls, but that’s just silly. Of course you can write more freely if you’re anonymous, but why should you hurt others? That’s just dumb. I am not hurting anybody when I write personally without disclosing my personal information and anybody who thinks that I do needs to speak with their doctor.

This blog had the intention of answering a lot of questions and blogging challenges from the WordPress.com community, but so far that has been pretty pointless for this blogger. The reason being that the questions so far that I’ve seen are far to personal and requires me to disclose personal information that I do not want to share with you. Instead this blog took a different route and I discovered something I apparently am quite good at and that is to inspire and motivate others. So that’s what I’m gonna do with this blog for as long as it’s possible. Then it’s a win-win situation for all!
